A (Preschool) Diamond in a Rough

Maiski was born to teach! Joining our UpliftED Teacher Training Programme in 2018, she was an obvious diamond in the rough – already sparkling and eager to become more. Her centre, Rough Diamonds Early Learning Centre was already a happy preschool where children were learning something daily. Maiski took to our training, wringing every drop of learning out of our curriculum. However she struggled because her two tiny classrooms were too cramped. Having no other choice, she often held lessons for her Grade R’s outside. One day, they were baking ‘sun bread’ in little flower pots. Another day they were checking on the sprouting seeds they had planted in little cups.

Beyond training, UpliftED always looks for ways to connect their trainees to local companies and groups for more support. One local church team ran a donation drive for Rough Diamonds. Maiski received books, dress up costumes, stationery and some extra cleaning items. On top of that FedGroup sponsored a major renovation – repainting the inside of each classroom, adding beautiful murals outside, and building a brand new Grade R classroom! Maiski covered the tiling costs and bought a turf carpet. This year, Maiski starts with more space for each of her classes three to operate well. The Rough Diamonds’ Grade R class has a beautiful new room. Across the preschool, there is more room for everyone to learn and be creative. Already an ambitious entrepreneur, Maiski has received help to realize her vision for Rough Diamonds sooner…and can start dreaming new dreams. As we follow up with her throughout the year, we can’t wait to see what she’ll do next!
