Marvelous – an UpliftED story

UpliftED Stats

In 2015, we invited Marvelous to train in our UpliftED Programme. She had spent the previous year volunteering in our Urban Kids preschool and showed such a spark of joy as she interacted with the children, and such a pro-active energy that we were excited to see her do even more. SO, we offered her training, again like her year of volunteering, no strings (or pay) attached. Marvelous jumped at the chance and began training with us on Thursdays, continuing to teach and assist in our preschool three days each week.  But, now it’s time for a bit of the back story. Marvelous, who had been forced to abandon her previous studies due to home and personal circumstances, had despaired of ever achieving her dream of  being involved in a profession (such as nursing or teaching). She had resigned herself to make her life reasonable and fight for a better future for her son. Having lost hope for her own education, she determined to change her son’s future. Her volunteering at Urban Kids Preschool started one year after she took the step to enrol her son at Urban Kids. This preschool programme gave her access to quality education for him as it runs on greatly reduced fees, but was still a big sacrifice for her and her husband. Not long after, the opportunity was presented.

Today, Marvelous is teaching. She was awarded a bursary to do her Level 4 training as the top trainee in our programme of 2015. She is not only fighting for her son’s future, but is climbing her own ladder of success!
